Kids Under Cover Cubby House Challenge
'Cubby Life' by Ducon in collaboration with Six Degrees Architects
Kids Under Cover (KUC) takes an early-intervention approach to preventing youth homelessness. KUC is the only organisation in Australia offering the unique combination of housing, scholarships and mentors for homeless and at-risk young people.
As part of Ducon's commitment to helping others, in 2012 we participated in the Cubby House Challenge, one of KUC's main fundraising events. This event, a focus of the Melbourne Flower and Garden Show, requires each participant to create a cubby house to be auctioned. This raises funds for, and build awareness about, the important work of KUC.
Our vision was of a low-tech and playful cubby house; a place where occupants can relax, explore and learn. To help realise this vision, we partnered with Six Degrees Architects. Our cubby included both a growing and a climbing wall, as well as lots of cubby holes for storing secret objects. In addition, our cubby could be opened up to the surrounding garden, enabling it to operate as both a private and communal space.
We were particularly proud to learn that our cubby house broke KUC's records, achieving the highest auction rate for any cubby house in the event's history.
"Kïds Under Cover is a great organisation, making a big difference with limited resources. Ducon were delighted to get involved and support their program." Peter Mason, Ducon
