Ducon were approached to provide a Design and Construct solution in the conversion of the disused Caulfield rail depot building, to a function space for maintenance staff that attend to the Frankston, Pakenham and Cranbourne lines.
The existing building has heritage overlay, and was constructed in the early 1900s. The design brief called for robustness whilst still promoting functionality and comfort.
Ducon utilised experience and strong relationships with design consultants to achieve a building that served a highly diverse range of requirements.
The age, heritage overlay and previous use of the building presented a number of challenges, including; - Aged service infrastructure - Hazardous materials removal - Building code compliance including safety and DDA - Active railway / transport infrastructure space - Completing all of the above within the required timeframes, inclusive of the design stage.
