Peninsula Health engaged Ducon Building Solutions under a Design & Construct (D&C) model to undertake a comprehensive refurbishment of the Frankston Community Care Unit (FCCU)—a 20-bed mental health recovery facility that provides essential support services for residents on their journey to independent living. The brief was to address the facility’s aging infrastructure, enhance functionality, and ensure compliance with modern safety standards while maintaining the comfort and well-being of the residents. Given the sensitive nature of the environment, the project required thorough planning and execution to minimise disruptions to ongoing operations and maintain a safe, supportive atmosphere for residents and staff alike.
Leveraging our experience in delivering complex refurbishments within live, sensitive environments, Ducon implemented a staged construction strategy that allowed Peninsula Health to continue providing critical care services throughout the project. This included careful sequencing of works and the use of temporary barriers to isolate construction zones, ensuring that safety and operational continuity were upheld at all times.
The scope encompassed a broad range of upgrades designed to transform the CCU into a modern, compliant, and energy-efficient facility. Key elements of the project included:
One of the standout aspects of this project was Ducon’s ability to manage multiple design variations without compromising project timelines. A total of eight variations were successfully dealt with, including relocating smoke detection systems, reconfiguring spaces to enhance accessibility, and implementing tailored performance solutions to address complex compliance requirements. These updates were delivered seamlessly in a design-and-construct environment, with Ducon’s team maintaining open communication with all stakeholders to ensure transparency and alignment throughout the project.
Ducon’s commitment to maintaining the well-being of residents and staff was further demonstrated through the implementation of strict safety protocols and daily site monitoring, ensuring a safe and comfortable environment during construction.
The successful refurbishment of the Frankston Community Care Unit has transformed the facility into a modern, welcoming, and compliant environment that supports Peninsula Health’s mission to provide high-quality mental health recovery services. Delivered on time and to the highest standards, the upgraded facility now offers enhanced living conditions, improved safety, and greater accessibility, setting a new benchmark for mental health care environments. Ducon’s ability to deliver tailored, solution-based outcomes in a live operational setting reaffirms our position as a trusted partner in the healthcare sector.
