Ducon has been engaged by Metro Trains Melbourne as part of the Protective Services Officers Rollout program to build numerous POD facilities.
These were constructed at every train station in Melbourne, with the purpose of minimising crime and creating a safe environment for commuters. To date, Ducon have constructed just over 100 PODS of the Metro Train System, and several on the regional system.
The general build of each Pod consisted of a concrete slab, steel frame and sheet roofing. External cladding at the majority of Pods was of Exotec 9mm Panel, with the exception being Heritage listed stations where the external cladding was weatherboard. All Pods were provided with electrical, mechanical and hydraulic services as required, and included an purpose built temporary holding area with bench seat and CCTV facilities. Internal furniture included Wetgear, CCTV and data cupboards as well as standard work stations.
After a number of Pods has been built, Ducon were able to better consider their administration and procedural approach to help streamline the building process. A large number of the same suppliers and sub-contractors were used for simplicity, and to ensure that all personnel had valid RWIC cards. Labour had to be managed very closely due to budget allowance.
The Pods were all delivered within the contracted period, to the satisfaction of the all project stakeholders including Metro Trains Melbourne, Public Transport Victoria, and Victoria Police.
