Ducon carried out the Substation Switch Gear Upgrade with precision and a strong focus on safety, coordination, and structural integrity. The works involved the modification of internal brick walls, requiring temporary works engineered solutions comprising of needle propping to multiple brick walls, steel portal frames and lintels designed to reinforce the existing building framework.
A new steel substructure was constructed inside the existing building in two stages, incorporating the specific requirements to support the new 22KV SWITCHGEAR. This included custom FRP floor panels, purpose-built suspended concrete slab with weld-fixed reinforcement tied into the station’s earth grid, including a concrete ramp for plant access to the installed units. As part of the upgrade, existing roller doors were also converted to fire-rated doors to meet current safety standards.
Operating within a live substation that feeds an active rail corridor, Ducon implemented detailed staging plans and robust safety protocols to minimise disruption. Close coordination with our client and other stakeholders ensured that critical rail operations continued uninterrupted throughout the works.
