As part of the Victorian School Building Authority’s (VSBA) Capital and Minor Capital Works Programs, Ducon was engaged to design and construct new Covered Outdoor Learning Areas (COLAs) at both Somers and Somerville Primary Schools. These projects aimed to provide all-weather outdoor spaces that support flexible learning and recreational activities, tailored to the needs of each school community.
At Somerville Primary School, Ducon delivered a robust steel-framed structure with a Colorbond roof and protective column pads, built for long-term durability and safety. Works also included civil upgrades and landscape remediation to integrate the new COLA seamlessly into the existing school precinct.
At Somers Primary School, the team managed demolition of existing features, followed by the construction of a new COLA with structural steel, Colorbond roofing, and integrated lighting and PA infrastructure.
Both projects were delivered in live school environments, requiring careful staging, safety planning, and close collaboration with school leadership and project consultants. Ducon worked alongside Cohen Leigh Architects and our subcontractor network to ensure high-quality delivery with minimal disruption to daily school operations.
Together, these projects demonstrate Ducon’s ability to manage multiple sites concurrently, delivering functional, future-focused learning spaces that enhance student wellbeing and community use.
